This doesn't really affect osu!, as Touhou" songs here are available freely, iirc.
That's pretty flawed logic. As far as I can tell ZUN doesn't allow any of his content to be used in any other games, nor in any way on the App Store / Marketplace. Of course, you are in charge of your own s here so that doesn't concern me at the moment.

Hmm, does this includes music from touhou games? Anyway, it's not that free.
I did directly with specific details, so it is safe to say yes.

See http://osustream.com/ for further details.
Interestingly Bad Apple and Cirno's Perfect Math Class were used in the game named Music GunGun 2. Anyway Zun doesn't want to use touhou remixes in apps, seems we have no choice... I'll wait.
Music GunGun was released by Taito. ZUN used to work for Taito. Maybe something to do with it :).
Finally got around to posting haha. After playing, I can safely say that it's very fun to play, and it even got my brother into it! XD Looking forward to the new versions (more songs especially, since I don't like most of the songs available atm, not to mention spacing is really screwy lol) :D
Question about the online ranking - would we need to replay the songs for the scores to be submitted? :O

Overall, cool game, actually someone asked me how I got so good if I'd only been playing for a couple of days and I was like, lol yea, I played the PC version XD

EvianBubble wrote: o138

It's not "screwy" as it has been through a pretty strenuous QC process. It is different to PC osu! (constant distance spacing) but has to be in order to be playable on small screens. Future maps will feature similar spacing.

EvianBubble wrote: o138

Most of the songs you have won't be available for ranking. The ones that will be will need to be replayed, yes.
Just forced a collegue to test it on his iphone.. now i need it for android hehe.
First impressions was awesome~

Wow, thanks for the reply! :O I guess I am just so used to PC spacing that stream's is messing me up :P Eagerly awaiting the next version :3
Does this mean it's back in the app store now? *Goes to check anyway, making this post meaningless*
Just to clarify, osu!stream maps are generally spaced. Jumps are very easy with two hands, which is why you see so many of them. Just like osu!, you should expect to see them at intuitive spots. Spacing with multi-touch patterns is something of an oxymoron but one of the two objects will usually be spaced, and these patterns should be obvious because of connecting lines.

Likewise, large spacing is easier to see and play, so it gets used on all difficulties.

while the iOS version isn’t available, android is progressing smoothly, and quite playable.
It's probably not released to the public yet, but i'm guessing it's going to be available soon.
The Android version appears to be progressing much more quickly than what I'd envisioned. At this rate, the game will be out by the time I get a new phone.

peppy, you wonderful thing!
I dont see the game in the app store, it says "not available in U.S."

You're only encouraging people to actually disobey peppy and get the skin themselves.
Actually I think the reason to post it was to show his disrespect. It's all good.
@NoHitter @peppy
I'm not going to release any of these files at all. I already had them kind of made while I was sending the PM to you peppy. I wasn't doing it out of disrespect, sorry if I offended you. I will remove my posts if you want me to.
I was just wondering if the game is out on the Itunes store yet because I still can't find it.(Maybe because i'm in China for vacation?)
The game has been temporarily recalled from the appstore because a very large portion of the library was discovered to be illegal. (Note that it seems to be the developers who noticed the problem rather than iTunes complaining in case that wasn't clear).
I think you completely missed the point there.

It's more like he got permission to use touhou songs from ZUN, but ZUN changed his policy for usage of his works so the app had to be pulled.

It was, but then it was pulled out of the app store temporarily for containing touhou songs which broke ZUN's policy for usage of his works on itunes. (I probably wasn't clear on that. Sorry)

From what I've read, osu!stream will be released very soon without any touhou songs but will have new songs.
lol...v1.1 sure takes long enough to arrive, but anyway...

I reread both the entire thread and the interview on the osu!monthly...but there are still some technical aspects that I feel a little unclear or, some game elements that peppy didn't really go into details to explain them :o
So, a few questions:

1. Firstly, do those "hand-picked beatmappers" get paid?
As this is a commercial product and peppy actually benefit from this game, it only make sense that beatmappers wouldn't want to spend their free time doing free works.

2. Can someone give me a insight regarding how the score calculation works?
Played the game few times, I can see the score system got revised. Makes sense because peppy has introduced new types of notes in this game, so some kind of formula revisit is needed. But there are something else I noticed beyond the simple "revisit"...
(1). Seems that it's impossible to get a score more than 1 million points(unless someone can spin really fast)...?
(2). Accuracy Bonus...is it based directly on your accuracy, or how many Geki/Elite Beats/300s you get, or some other calculation method...?
Sometimes I thought I was playing fine, but was surprised when I received no accuracy bonus at all lol
(3). And the rank letter...is "A" the highest?

Now the biggest question:
3. What's the initial configruation in mind when peppy's developing osu!stream?
The original EBA/Ouendan was played on the resistive NDS's 3-inch touchscreen using a pen or a finger.
Osu! can be played on different input devises such as touchscreen, tablet, mouse, keyboard.
But I think in osu!stream, the experience gap across different settings will be too huge between different sizes of screen(ex: 4-inch, 7-inch, and 10-inch as in smartphones and tablets). There's enough space for me to place my two fingers on a tablet screen, but little crowded on a smartphone. Different circle size(if it's small on tablet, it will be really tiny on a phone), screen resolution, pixel density, etc etc....all these factors needed to be considered when mapping on this game.
That's not say it can't be done, in fact I believe peppy has these in mind when he implement the Autoplay feature, which is a clear demonstration of how to properly play a map(or "solve" a map without getting your fingers tied together lol) It also opens some possibilities for mapping technique too, such as you can place 2 overlap sliders at the same time.
And, if peppy plans to add more finger at the same time, he really need to establish a mapping guide to accompany that.

lol my english sucks......spending hours on online dictionary checking my spelling :3

Your english isn't that bad o.o
I heard that they're doing their best mapping beatmaps that can be played on iphone and ipad, but I think it should be better to have separate maps between Ipad and Iphone. There's too much differencies in the screen's dimensions, and I don't think they could do more than 2 fingers on the iphone, but on the ipad it could be so much fun !
I just wanted to hear that how osu!stream is different with other touch-based rhythm games, but people are just introducing more and more rhythm games, lololol

Maybe I shouldn't have strated that. I wanted to post something more, but I'll just stop. Let's go to videogame category or somewhere.

Well...actually I'm quite intrested in how other touch-based rhythm games work around my aforementioned issue, so don't need to feel bad >w<
as far as I know, osu!stream mappers are volunteers and map because they enjoy the prospect of doing so rather than for any particular monetary gain. will peppy pay them? up to him.

i'm not familiar with the changes in the scoring algorithm, but i can say that osu!stream is pretty much built around being played on a typical iphone screen held horizontally and with the thumbs used as the primary input method. that is the briefing given to mappers, at least.

We're doing our best, but creating maps takes time. osu!stream's library of both free and paid songs will grow.

Only iphones...? I'm surprised...
s/iphone/multi-touch device of similar size

it plays well on my iPad, i just use 2 index fingers (and an occasional thumb) rather than my thumbs. Android is also planned and being worked on too, according to peppy.

In short: no, its not only for iPhone, but it needs to be playable on an iPhone. Some things that are playable on an iPad or Android tablet might be near impossible on an iPhone / Android smartphone. osu!stream has pretty strict difficulty setting / circle size rules to keep this in check.

also: follow @osustream on twitter.
I sort of forgot which pack was touhou 1 and 2, which was was boozehound in?
ppy took out the touhou songs iirc
Ok I bought an I-pad today and played osu!stream, and I got #5 in Garbled Waves - Apatisk Expert.
I still don't know how to deal with this 'device'... How could I managed to achieve this?

Anyway, my first impression:
1. Penalty of missing hold object is quite harsh. If you noticed that an object you just touched was hold object, not a normal one, you are already late. Your health bar will be severly hurt and you might fail.
2. I guess there aren't many different play styles... The way you should touch those objects are quite obvious.

Randy96 wrote: 6c1p5g

Yes, but I bought one pack and I can get it's replacement free, but I have no idea which one it is
Which pack replaced the one with Boozehound?
mekadon_old
Imo having a custom offset setting sounds good. I always get 5~7ms late which pisses me off :(
I just played the game today lol
Just picked up Osu! Stream today now that it's back on the App Store. Loving the hold and multiple touch additions, great features to put in this version! Crisp UI, responsive controls, you all have hit it out of the park with this game.

That being said, played through the four free songs available and have about given up on this game unfortunately due to the inability to play multiple difficulties. I love rhythm games but have absolutely no will to repetitively replay a song to perfect it. Back when I used to play DDR, I used to purposefully *not* memorize the steps so that it would be more of a challenge to complete the song as opposed to getting a high score. I play TapSonic on Legendary 6 Key and consider it an accomplishment to simply complete a song.

Hence, when I played Ouendan/2/EBA, my challenge was getting through all the modes, then going back and playing the songs I enjoyed from time to time. It didn't matter if I beat Ready Steady Go! with a D, it worked for me. So when I popped this game on I threw myself into the songs and got through them on Stream with B's and a D on Apatisk. Then realized I've hit a wall. I can't play Expert until I get an A on the song. Given that the requirements for getting an A on a song is to FC+ the song, I will pretty much never get there. I simply have no wish to play the songs ten times over again to memorize the beats in order to play a harder version of it.

I enjoy playing Osu! I enjoy what gameplay there is in Osu! Stream. I'd just love to be able to play the entire game rather than getting the feeling that I'm apparently playing it "wrong" by simply enjoying it rather than going for the leaderboards. Please consider giving those of us that aren't leaderboard style players the opportunity to fail at Expert modes. It may not seem like much, but it would give me and I'm sure others more of a reason to continue to play this game as it grows.
You realise that expert will be near impossible if you can't A stream, right? Also, you don't need FC to get an A. I can do it with 5+ misses.

The idea of setting a bar to enter expert mode is that without reaching that bar, you will fail within 5 seconds. I did extensive testing with real-life friends that showed this was the case. Expert mode is not only harder in patterns, but also harder in judgement, and the jump is far too big if you can't do semi-decently on stream mode.

I will take your into consideration, but ask that you also persist a bit more and work on that A rank. It isn't as hard as you think.
Topic Starter
back during the time when stream still has the touhou songs, i can manage to consistently clear expert charts while doing horribly on stream mode (boozehound and being proof are some of the experts i had played. i know they're easy for expert charts {shanghai tea house expert is HARD), but still...). it kinda felt that the requirement was being too harsh. it gives some sort of an anti-climatic feeling if you can smack an end-boss with one-hit because the previous sub-boss forced you to get the best items and levels just to beat him. but if you made it more lenient, then unlocking will be almost pointless. you have to balance those two.

i say, the requirement would be as is, but the grading system should be made a bit more lenient. i dunno if i own a wrong version of stream in my iPod, but getting only like 7 "50's" on EASY charts already gets me a B.
I already made the grading more lenient, but I am willing to push it further. It's just a matter of finding a way to do so without making it feel totally lame :P.
Topic Starter
i guess the part of blame would be also to me not getting the latest builds so i'm not really much updated about it. :p
when are u planning to add android for osustream?
We got new free song in osu!stream and that is Want You Gone, which is famous for being ending? song of Portal 2
(wow peppy must be working so hard on this.)

Ok it's time to push me down, guys.

I don't know what you guys think, but personally, I don't like that map a lot... It could have used characteristic features of touchscreen more, I guess?

osu!stream must be the most accuracy-needing game I ever played, lol.
You're right, the map is too classical, and it has too much holds...
But the feature is awesome, still :D

Roga-don wrote: 4nd59

osu! and osu!stream looks similar, but input device is totally different, so it is quite different than we thought. For example, jumps can be quite hard to be dealt with in osu!, but in osu!stream, it might be disturbing when reading beats, but after that, those things become quite easy. (Don't know exaclty why but I don't depend on distance snap that much when I'm playing osu!stream while I rely on it a lot in osu!. Of course, totally out of distance snap is quite disturbing.)

But... too many holds? Hmm... Whatever, people have variety of thoughts.
really enjoy osu!stream; all the new stuff threw me for a loop, really adds much appreciated variety.

unfortunately i'm going to stick with osu! vanilla for as long as possible; song quantity > quality on this one for me. keep up the good work in any case!
I don't see a need to "stick" with only one. Enjoy them both, if you can :). I know I do.
I was able to try out osu!stream on the iPad, it was pretty cool. The screen made it sort of hard to do sliders, (my finger kept "sticking" to the screen) and sooo many 100s and 50s. I liked the osu!stream-specific elements of gameplay, but they felt a little unintuitive at times. This may partially be due to the fact that my hand kept getting in the way.

Despite the few negatives, it really was a fun experience. I've only tried out the free material so far, but purchasing the packs is a definite possibility. I'll still be sticking primarily to regular osu! but I'll make sure to check out the content released for osu!stream. So yeah, I guess this is my review of the game? Cool.
The trick to sliders is to press very lightly. The screen is capacitive so doesn't require any force (you can almost use just your nail as long as your skin is close-ish). The judgement is far harsher than osu! on purpose. The new elements become easier once you play a bit, and we try to map in a way that hands don't cover the map (with exceptions for expert-level songs).
Oh, good advice. I'll go try again.
(and again, great game)
I bought an iPad 2 this week and finally had the opportunity to try osu! Stream. I'm very impressed.
Keep up the good work and make more maps! :)
It helps to wash your hands (and dry them well) before playing.
This should all be like...in a disclaimer within the game.

speaking of this, there was this certain part on Sunrise's stream chart that has hold + circle combinations that can tie your hands in knots when you press it in a certain way, especially when you play it in a "handheld" fashion. there might be more correct ways to do that part, but if players like me keep on falling on that most of the time, then yeah...
After I've finished with my contributions to the next ~2-3 packs, I want to take a look at some of the earlier maps and hopefully bring them up to current standards.
I was thinking mostly in of hitsounds, but there shouldn't be thumb gymnastics on Hard stream.
I don't believe there actually is.
NEED MORE MAPPERS!

Any predictions on when the Android version pops out?
We do have an android testing build available, but it seems to have some issues. I haven't personally looked into android development yet and Intermezzo (who is working on it) doesn't seem to have much time lately, but you can me on IRC if you would like to give it a test run.
Sure, will do when I'm back from college.
Hi, just by to ask a question
There is a guy who created an entire Touhou-Imperishable Night remake, and made it availble on official app store
He initially charged money, later on, the app later became free
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhNfy9tdsbU
There are also several other Touhou related apps that actually charges money
They all didn't get into any sort of trouble
So the question is:
Can you bring the Touhou song back as free DLC song pack? I know you are worried about copyright infringement and stuff, but after seeing how "fantasy night of Touhou" made it to the app store with no problem, I don't see how it would be risky to include Touhou songs pack as a FREE DLC for a FREE game?
(also, I am not meant to be trolling, just asking a general question)
I am not worried about copyright infringement; I entered direct conversation with ZUN and was told that it is not possible to distribute on the app store. The touhou game you link was likely the *reason* he will no longer allow use of touhou content on the iOS/android platforms (he changed his soon after that game was released).

I also asked whether I could release the content for free and it was said that this may be possible but I would need to present the content to them for checking first. I have not yet got that far, due to the process involved in doing so.
How did you manage to get into with Zun anyway? Also, does he speaks English?
Well anyway, really hope the free touhou dlc becomes a reality, most songs on the able list is just really "lackluster" (I still bought ALL of them to Osu anyway)
Thanks for the info and the quick reply
We are working on bringing more fun song packs out, so keep a look out for that.

Why isnt the ous app on the itouch appstore like the original osu we play on the computer??? Im just asking because i dont like that there isnt that much good maps to play on the osu!stream for itouch:"( It is a good game but idk it just doesnt feel the same.... :(
Cheer-no
If it were easily possible, I'm sure peppy would be happy to allow -created maps in. The problem is that unlike normal osu! which is in a legal grey area, osu!stream is 100% legal and so has to get the rights from the song-owners in order to make beatmaps for them. New maps only come once in a blue moon, but at least they're all high-quality!
I'm no lawyer so I'm kind of speculating here. I figure it owes to the way the 's safe harbour provisions work. With osu!, infringement claims are directed to peppy, at which point he is required to remove the infringing beatmaps. With osu!stream, infringement claims (I figure) are directed to Apple, at which point they are required to remove the infringing apps.
If you do play mods for o!s please make a busdriving shake mod because i am only good while being shaked like a earthquake of bad built streets ... just kidding ^^

I love this game <3 All free songs are awesome and i might buy the VVVVVV pack soon :)
Already leaved an iTunes review there but it isn't approved yet D:

This thread is only 16 pages. Please go back and read, at very least from this post: viewtopic.php?p=966060#p966060

You should probably read again too...
I guess I should rephrase that: Apply that logic to why osu!iphone isn't on App Store already.
Because I don't want it there, basically. If maps were ever loadable, it would be done via stream.
I was very surprised when I found out that osu! was in the Apple store. I thought it was impossible unless you took a different direction, which you did. Either way I thought I'd drop by the forum and express my opinion on it.

The game is definitely polished, the art is beautiful. The game itself is probably one if not, the hardest rhythm game out there on the iPhone (the scoring is not lenient at all) which is a good thing! The gameplay is amazing, it's almost a whole new osu! with new feature.

Now for the suggestion, I think there should be an option to disable the score showing after tapping the circle. Sometimes it confuses me for thinking it as another hit circle and should the option implemented, I wish that only a purple/green/orange outline of the circle appear instead of the score for the indicator of bad/good/perfect. I also hope that we can scroll through songs and preview the songs much faster rather than clicking it to preview it (maybe holding the highlighted song for a second will preview the song? Also my only grip is that is the game doing well enough? I mean, I'd have totally been clueless about osu!stream if I've not check this forum (make a thread on Toucharcade and maybe get them to review osu!stream?) The IAP also seems to be pretty expensive (but meh, I won't blame you when every single rhytmh game out there have like 10 different song pack for their IAP), compared to Cytus which is also a new rhythm game that is very well done and polished and does not have any IAP (all updates/songs will be free). Other than that it is a great game and while the game still lack songs (especially those bemani/anime type song), I hope osu!streams does well.

EDIT: How could I forget the auto-play feature. It's probably the best feature yet in any rhythm game in the phone market.
Thanks for the .

I'm not sure I want to allow disabling the score explosions; this is one of the key elements of the game. We map so they don't get in the way of later objects, and they help space maps correctly.

I will try adding previews on hover and see how it handles performance-wise.

The game is doing alright, but we are lacking enough songs for it to be doing great. We are working on that hard at the moment, and have some *awesome* stuff incoming :). The song packs are on-par with japanese rhythm games on the app store, if not cheaper (in the case of taiko). One credit on an arcade machine will let you play 2-3 songs for around the asme price as purchasing these songs forever in the case of osu!stream. While dropping the price would likely increase sales and possibly even overall revenue, I disagree with going as low as 99c for a whole song back. So for the time being, I don't plan on adjusting the pricing.

Cytus uses a completely different payment model, as you have to buy the game. I wanted osu!stream to be free in the spirit of osu!, and plan on keeping it this way. More free songs are on their way too.

I for one haven't experienced any trouble playing with score explosions. I would guess it's something that becomes less of a problem for
more experienced players :)
One thing I love about Osu!stream, in comparison to normal Osu! is how much easier it is to learn for new players, while at the same time being challenging in a different way for more experienced ones.

But wow! Expert mode isn't very lenient
It's not lenient on purpose. We really wanted to provide a challenge that means getting an SS is very, very hard. Makes the rankings more interesting, no? :p
added with the extra effort it takes to adjust to a whole different input method, I guess I'm just the one who sucks :P (this is actually more often the reason behind a problem, than there actually being a real problem).
I was really surprised when I saw the Hold Note, and also the simultaneous note! I really want to buy this game but... I don't have Android Tablet Whatever... D:

Although, I hope you do well in the Song Copyright, Law & Illegal Stuff... Whatever the **** is it. They are pretty complex and you're dealing with law here, you know.

Peace Out. :)
I finally got someone to let me borrow their iphone to play. (I was being an idiot while playing and decided to hold the phone such that my finger was crushed by my headphones, so one of my fingers hurt right now)

Love the polish of the interface, esp the intro screen.

About the songs, there is a sort of lack of things in either extreme imo. My friend, even after completing the tutorial thought that even easy mode was a little hard (She could do hitchhiker but sunrise's easy diff was a little hard for her). It would be nice if there was maybe something even easier? The other complaint I got from her was the lack of a fast song in the free song pack (I don't know if she would have been able to play it), but I think she would have enjoyed it more if there was something a bit faster paced.

On my end, I thought the extreme diffs that came free were a little too easy... After getting used to the interface (took about 15 tries), I could beat both of them (with Cs, probably a given knowing my horrible accuracy on standard). On another note, I was also a little annoyed at seeing a note partially overlapped by the hp bar in hitchiker (forgot which difficulty).

Oh well afterward, my friend took her phone back and uninstalled the game (I think she only got it for me to play T_T). For myself it was fun for the short period it lasted. I am not sure how often I would play if I actually had an iOS device, but I do frequently play osu!droid to burn time. As a result, I can see myself playing casually, but I probably will need to try some of the harder maps to satisfy my need for speed.
Yeah, the difficulty balance is a bit lacking until more songs are released. There's been kind of a slump in activity, which will increase again once more packs are released within the next few weeks. We have one artist in particular whose maps have very approachable easy difficulties, but they're not high priority at the moment.

Regarding HP bar overlaps, we're not really bothered about that sort of thing, as long as it doesn't inhibit gameplay. There really isn't a lot of space to work with and spacing has to be relatively large for the sake of playability and aesthetics--rather than mappers compromising their maps for the sake of forcing patterns to fit, such things are overlooked.

Don't worry about hard maps either--once the next two packs are out, there will be quite a few challenging [Expert] maps. One or two mappers dropped some serious clangers with how they mapped them, but once they're fixed, they really will be great.
The existing able packs also have pretty challenging experts ;).
Btw, what is the song name that's on the main menu and the song playing through the tutorial?
It's an original by my friend nekodex.
