Great tablet purchasing guide. I use an intuos3 and my tablet has been working just as new for the past 5 or so years that I've used it for art and osu! (2 years+). I hover except for when I spin and the only noticeable wear is just the tiny area in the middle where I spin. My pen is great. Keyboard has not broken either.

I think I might switch from my Intuos4 to a Bamboo Pen. I'm finding that I don't really do any art anymore, so my tablet is basically just an Osu! input device.

Bamboo + intous are the best tablets all of them works, all you need is training with them so .

If you activate a circle when you press down you can fix that, i googled a bit and found out that you have to disable a think in W7 and the ring got removed. it basicly it right klicks everytime you press it down.

Lucky me I already had a tablet (the Trust Slimline Sketch tablet) when I discovered Osu!. However, it is a very cheap tablet and I wonder if I should keep it, for some reasons:

Even if the tablet is large enough with a good accuracy, the pen contains 2 AAA batteries which makes it big and heavy, and it sometimes opens itself.
The pen is made in a plastic material that gets slippy in my hand after 1min of non-intensive use, is it my fault ?
The hoovering gets regularly buggy (immobile pointer) and I need to click on the tablet to make it work (even with new batteries). This made me ragequit many maps.
I feel a lack of reactivity, but I may be wrong on this point.

I just can't seem to find any decent review of this tablet so does anyone knows something about it ?
Since I may use the tablet for other graphic applications, I'm considering buying real Wacom stuff, there are plenty of people who sell their tablets (that they almost never used) cheaper than the official price.

It's probably too old to have a decent review of it.
I would buy a new tablet, playing with a broken/old one is hell.
If you're going to buy another tablet then keep in mind that buying a used one is risky, it could be old and have a massive delay. I had a 7 year old tablet that I never used before, after all that time I started using it but it had a delay of like 1/10th of a second. You could buy a tablet for half the price of a new one, but paying that extra ensures warranty and quality in my opinion.
Whatever you choose to do, stay with Wacom.

Some people buy one for no solid reason, use it for 2h and then try to get rid of it, most of the time 20-30% cheaper. I'd just like to keep the same area I have now, without paying too much. Wacom also doesn't automatically install, but it comes with a driver software CD.
A vitally important feature Wacom products have is "Force proportions" which forces your area to have the same proportions as your screen resolution.

There is nothing to say about the software for this tablet. The "force proportions" option exists ("rapport d'écran" in french, for "screen ratio"), and many customizable parameters too. The only matter is the quality of the tablet itself

Is it really worth buying the newest wacom generation ? It is more expensive and it doesn't feature the touch usage, so is it balanced by an improvement in the quality, the stylus, durability, etc ? (I keep in mind that I may use it for occasional drawings)

FYI lpi has 0 influence on osu! unless your active area is something thats 0.5sq inch which the driver wont let you do nor I don't think anyone here has that kind of motor control. Its high density count is purely for graphic applications that utilize absolute position data (Not cursor position) for example like drawing a very small circle on a 12,000px x 9000px canvas thats fitting inside a 1920x1080 screen the circle would look like a pixel when drawn on the monitor but if you zoom in it will be a small circle in retrospect its just to pick up the finer things.

These are my tablet's settings. 0.95 x 0.6 = 0.57 sq inches. My skill hasn't reach yet the limits of the tablet and it still feels really responsive and smooth. And it's just a Trust Mini Tablet, which costs around 20€, not an expensive Wacom tablet.

I've used different kinds of Wacom tablets and I can tell you that most tablets will function pretty much the same in osu! and you shouldn't worry about it. The only palpable differences would be the tablet's size, dimensions, and durability, all of which you can get used to or touch up in the tablet's properties tab. Other than that (i.e. buttons, pressure features, different kinds of nibs) shouldn't affect you unless you use Wacom products for digital art.

They have quite a bit of input lag, so I don't know how viable it is. Maybe if you set the universal offset just right.

I've been using my tablet for a couple of days now and it hasn't exactly been a pleasant experience, I find it very difficult to get used to (which is understandable) and I've been noticing the cursor gets jittery when the pen nib comes into light or quick with the tablet. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong.

Hover, it might feel weird for a bit but it is very worth it. Allows you to move faster and puts less wear and tear on your tablet/pen nibs.

I guess you have a point, just the fact that using a pen from using a mouse is a massive step got to have wrist movements and i've always had problems holding pens weirdly as a child

Just a few games using it is tough to get used, i guess practice makes perfect!

I'm a lefty who uses my right for the mouse, and I got a tablet in March. My left hand is still faster with Z/X than my right hand is with Num1/Num2, but I've made considerable improvement in the past few months. I have my mouse DPI at exactly double my tablet area, and as of right now my accuracy on both are about equal (but the tablet is a bit more consistent). I researched and got a zero-acceleration mouse so the difference between them aren't as big (aside from the feel), but assuming you have a more basic mouse or a laser mouse, you'll notice a big boost in accuracy with the tablet once you get used to it.

The "Touch" feature is multitouch with your fingers. Since you'll be using the pen when playing osu!, it won't matter. (My Bamboo Capture is a Pen&Touch tablet, and TBH I've disabled the multitouch feature because I never use it).

Also I just started osu, if I do end up getting a tablet, it will more then likely be Wacom Bamboo Capture Pen and Touch Tablet

My Bamboo Capture has buttons, but they're fairly stiff and have no travel distance. Assuming the Bamboo Fun has the same type of clicky buttons as mine, IMO it wouldn't be a viable choice. Your fingers would get more tired in comparison to just using a keyboard.

Oh, and if you have the money, go for a mechanical keyboard. It'll last longer than a normal keyboard, and it'll benefit your playing/typing. If that takes up too much space, you could try a Razer Orbweaver mechanical keypad (I'd recommend the Stealth Edition if you're looking into getting that, since it uses lighter keyswitches than the standard edition).

Got a Bamboo Pen and Touch off ebay for $30, hardly used. I'm a happy camper. CTL-460. They're good for osu right?

Full area on a Bamboo tablet is 5.8" x 3.6" (147mm x 92mm), but since you'll be buying a bigger tablet you'll have more flexibility with your area. You'll want to play around with it and find an area that is comfortable for you.

Just ordered a Capture tablet yesterday. Wouldn't a pen mouse be a decent substitute though, assuming it's accurate enough that the tablet's absolute tracking wouldn't be an advantage?

'sup. I'm planning to buy a tablet not only for osu!(although that's a big reason), but also for making sprites for my games(C++ and SFML FTW). And because of this, I don't think the small screen size of the Bamboo Pen will be big enough (although I've never used a graphics tablet, so I can't say). So, I found an alternative here.
I've read a couple of reviews of it and they all seemed pretty positive(the only drawback being the pen, which feels cheap and uses batteries, which most likely won't bug me too much). But how would it perform in Osu!? Some people told me non-Wacom teblets aren't great for Osu! and have too long delays. But, this Monoprice does just about everything better than the Bamboo Pen, for the same price.


If anyone has the Monoprice, I'd gladly want to hear how it performs in Osu!.

Types of Tablets

Wacom is the "brand name" of tablets - tablets are all they make, and they're widely accepted (by artists) as producing the best quality, most reliable tablets. I recommend buying from Wacom because of their reputation as producing high-quality products as a leader in the tablet world. They produce three main lines:

Cintiq - "Draw directly on the screen" tablets, these are used in very high-end professional applications, and cost a pretty penny.
Intuos - The Professional line of tablets, these have features above and beyond the Bamboo line, but lack a screen.
Bamboo - The general consumer line of tablets, these come cheap with all the features you need to get started as a hobbyist.

There are other lines, such as the Graphire or Volito tablets, but these names have been discontinued, replaced by the above lines.

For osu!, you are very unlikely to need a Cintiq or Intuos - these two lines cater to professional in graphic design and illustration, and cost much more than the tablets in the Bamboo line. They feature increased pressure sensitivity, more bundled graphics software, and advanced features such as barrel rotation or tilt sensitivity. These mean nothing in osu!, so only buy one of these if you're planning on using your tablet for serious graphic design work outside of osu!.

At the time of writing there are three versions of the Bamboo, all confusingly under the same "Bamboo" moniker (The Intuos lines are distinguished by number - Intuos5 is the latest at the time of writing). I would recommend either buying the second or third generation Bamboos - the first generation Bamboo tablets had the extra buttons on the top of the tablet rather than the side, which makes them awkward for use in osu!.

That's not true at all. The game gives absolutely no bonus for using a tablet, nor does it even have a way of detecting what pointing device you're using.

Hey! Thanks a lot for the post, I wanted to buy a tablet for osu! for a while but didn't have a clue where to start, this makes things a lot easier.

I do have a question though, as I'm fairly confused. You mentioned in your guide that "Pen", "Fun" and "Craft" are 2nd Gen tablets while "Connect", "Capture" and "Create" are 3rd Gen. And from what I understand from the posts here, 3rd Gen has better specifications than 2nd Gen. Now, I was doing some research through means other than this post, and Wacom's Wikipedia page doesn't mention anything about Generations. From what I understand, it says over there that "Create", "Capture", "Splash" and "Connect" are just the names the tablets are sold under in the Americas and "Fun", "Pen & Touch", "Pen" and "Manga" are the names they're sold under in the European region. (Link - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wacom#Product_lines )

So I was wondering if only 2nd Gen models are released in Europe with 3rd Gen only being available in the Americas, or is Wikipedia's info about the models having nothing more than different names just wrong?

Pen = Connect
Touch = Capture
Pen & Touch = Create

they do sell both generation models at both regions, they just call it by different names. well, let's just say that Wikipedia doesn't have enough information about Wacom.
