I propose that, if a song has an official video, then adding a video should be mandatory. There are a few exeptions to this rule:

- The video must not be explicit
- The video does not add something unique to the map. If the video is just an audio graph with a few zooms, then the video should not be added.
- The video creator does not allow the use of their video in osu!
- The beatmap has less than 5mb of free space left after all image and audio compression listed on the wiki.
- The beatmap contains a storyboard.

Also, a guideline: If a song has a video that was made by someone else, then the mapper should consider adding that video.

Strongly disagree because some songs have video that counts as explicit content, even though the song by itself is not.

Also, I don't think there is any reason to enforce video addition to the map. Maybe there is a reason but I can't think of it, your proposal is not plausible for now.

i dont think this should be required and should always stay optional.

there are some reasons why mappers chose not to add video like compressing videos to fit with the folder size limit is hard through trial and error to the actual hardware limitations of mappers where they cannot play videos or slow encoding that could take hours (personal experience) or slow / data capped internet

Alright, will add another condition: Video must not be explicit

"It only takes a few minutes" isn't that good of an argument you're making out to be, especially when facing with a lot stronger counters: Explicit content, device spec too low to render and thus cause lags, limit with slow internet data as the cherry on top, and most importantly, you have to abide yet another standard to ensure the video is of sufficient quality which only opens up another can of worms to deal with before pushing them to ranked.

Unless you do have better points up your sleeve, I'm firmly in the "it should stay optional" side.
skill issue lol

this... doesn't help your case at all...

can you also provide more arguments as to why you think videos **should** be added besides mappers' "laziness"?

This basically means "every (mapper & player) must spent more data on a beatmap (/)"

Have you even tried to rank map with video properly before?

What Zelzatter said already sums up the most issue that might come

videos have been optional and for good reason.

for the sake of discussion, TV Size would be the most obvious demographic of songs for this rule, while in theory simple, sourcing the video is a pain in the ass since you'll have to torrent the source, cut it and reprocess it. this takes at least half an hour at best.

outside of TV sizes, you'll run into many issues with music videos often having to be compressed to hell for it to be able to the web. the quality of longer videos will more often than not be way too subpar to be included into the game.

from a server side standpoint, not sure if peppy would like to have to purchase more storage to accommodate all of the videos, since adding a video effectively adds at least 10MB to your total beatmap.

while this is somewhat harsh, I agree with noch's sentiment that adding videos are, quite frankly, easier said than done.

this is coming from a person who tries his bestest to include videos in my beatmaps, and those above are the issues why I didn't bother adding them into my beatmapsets.

Yeah, no thanks. A player who wants it can always go add it themselves if they so desire.
Neto
As a mapper who always try to add video when possible, video should always be optional because it's an extra effort that you can or not do. Mapper already are enforced to add a lot of things that, for the most part, are player irrelevant. Sad as it may sound, 99% of players who go beyond playing their first hour of osu! already a skin and put dim in 100% black. It's kinda of a throwback to actually put a video in a map, which is why I do it because that's how I played the game back in 2014. So yeah, disagree.

how about u make a mod post with dl link for rank ready video for the map u want video added before it gets ranked? it only takes few minutes dont be lazy

You can add a video without making the beatmap local? Thought you had to make it local...
RandomeLoL
Nope...

Adding a video is up to the mapper. I would not consider this "lazy" by any means. Different mappers will have different preferences. Moreover I'd argue ing maps with videos is somewhat of a niche decision (no data to back it up) given it makes the beatmapset's size substantially bigger for little to no added benefit, other than eyecandy.

This has gotta be a big nope for me..Video is a very complicated subject on getting it and making sure it's the right quality, and it's definitely not a few minutes. It's a ton of extra work

For me personally, I'm highly against this especially for people who make their own custom backgrounds and gfx for maps where an official video would not match with that at all (goats like AlexDunk or JahsehOnMyWrist)

This is one of those things that is definitely better staying optional.
Leviathan
disagree anyway because i think this should be a choice on the mappers end but coming from someone who encodes and does a bunch of video stuff myself i often dont want to include said video because the video is just... too low quality and i want something better? nothing against the people who made the videos obviously, theyre still cool and they were released a long time ago but because of that it always feels like its not worth it when a player is on fullscreen

so theres no point in wasting storage by adding a video if no one is using it...
Broadsword
No. There's no benefit from making it mandatory and you haven't stated a reason why this is a good idea in first place.
Spy
Disagree.

First of all, there is the issue of storage capacity—not everyone is willing to deal with the space taken up by videos.

Secondly, this adds extra pressure and burden on mappers/BNs. They not only have to source the video but also handle transcoding and check the offset. On top of that, issues related to video quality and encoding could arise at any time.

Lastly, from what I’ve observed, more than half of the players play with a completely black background. So who is the video even for?

You’ve only just started mapping, so you don’t fully understand how tedious the process is from creating a map to getting it ranked. Standardizing changes for an optional feature won’t gain widespread approval.
Harbyter
nah big no for me, usually i never any video except when i'm forced to do it when doing the BN activity.
Fycho
Strongly disagree.
Okoayu
i think videos are similar territoory to backgrounds, forcing someone to use a certain video seems counterintuitive to me
McEndu
The arguments seem enough for this to be sent to the denied pile?

and also no
