Here's an unofficial update to the osu! OSX package. This is a direct replacement for the official osu! Wineskin package that can be found here: http://osuosx.tumblr.com

Video tutorial: community/forums/posts/7367239

It has several improvements and fixes several issues (in comparison to the official Wineskin package) including (but not exhaustive):
  1. Fixes game not launching on High Sierra
  2. Reduces input lag
  3. Reduces frame drops
  4. Increases FPS
  5. Removes the need for XQuartz
  6. Prevents f.lux temporarily disabling when switching windows
  7. Smoother opening of beatmaps
  8. Fixes erratic unfocusing of cursor when using keyboard to tap due to Location Services
  9. Allows swiping to switch between windows
  10. Fixes black screen issue with dual or more monitor setups
  11. Fixes minimising of osu! when focus changes

Alternative wineskins:
The following wineskins may be more up to date or work better for you.
Mic238 (July 2018): https://osu-ppy-sh.tvgratuite.org/community/forums/posts/7140911
Note: For peppy's Wineskin, if it fails to open, you must run sudo xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine 'osu!.app' in Terminal. See the osu! or Wineskin will not open! of my guide for more details.

If you're uncomfortable with using a file ed from a complete stranger (and you should be) you can follow my guide here to obtain (mostly) the same Wineskin package.
[Guide] Fixing Mac Issues: https://osu-ppy-sh.tvgratuite.org/community/forums/topics/679205

How to install 3t6x1u

Steps
  1. First you'll need to save your osu! data so you can transfer it over later. See my guide here on How to do a data backup (apply it on the old osu! app): https://osu-ppy-sh.tvgratuite.org/community/forums/topics/679205
  2. the package from the previously shown link
  3. Extract the .zip file
  4. Move the osu! application out of the s folder otherwise it will not start properly
  5. Right click on the osu! app and click Open. The osu! updater should run and start osu! after a while
  6. Close osu!
  7. See my guide here on How to restore a data backup (apply it on the ed osu! app): https://osu-ppy-sh.tvgratuite.org/community/forums/topics/679205
Now you can move the ed osu! application anywhere you want and it should work fine.

Having trouble opening osu!? See my troubleshooting tool: community/forums/topics/1036678.
Do not enable compatibility mode. It will break the wrapper.

If you are having issues after you see the osu! logo/updater please include the osu! updater logs found in osu! > Logs.

If you are having issues before you see the osu! logo/updater please include the Wineskin test run logs found after running a test run. (osu! > Open Package Contents > Wineskin > Advanced > Test Run)

Discord Rich Presence
For Discord Rich Presence to work you'll need to replace the discord-rpc.dll file located in the drive_c folder. (Thanks to slc for pointing out the alternatiave dll file)

Steps:
  1. xnu-discord-rpc.dll from this guy here: https://github.com/goeo-/discord-rpc/releases (If you have a Github considering starring the fork)
  2. Navigate to the drive_c folder (Right click osu! > Show Package Contents > drive_c)
  3. Navigate to the osu! folder
  4. Delete the existing discord-rpc.dll file
  5. Drag the xnu-discord-rpc.dll file into it and rename it to discord-rpc.dll

Troubleshooting
For those that are unable to open the osu!.exe file, such as nothing popping up, try moving the zip file (NOTE: Not the application, but the zip file containing the application) to another location, such as your Desktop or the Documents folder. Then, right click the application and select "Open". While this may seem redundant, this has a different effect to directly double clicking the file.

If Wineskin (the program inside the wrapper) refuses to open then make sure that you open osu! (the entire wrapper) at least once (so that it can get past the "ing osu! application" stage). osu! doesn't need to run, it just needs to get past the verification stage.

To update the osu!.exe contained within the wrapper, right click the wrapper and select: Show Package Contents, then Contents > Resources > drive_c > osu! folder.
the latest osu!.exe for Windows from the osu! website and then replace the osu!.exe in the folder with the ed one.

Razer Synapse may prevent osu! from opening. If this happens you need to quit Razer Synapse before opening osu!.

If nothing else works, try the steps in the section osu! or Wineskin will not open! from my guide: https://osu-ppy-sh.tvgratuite.org/community/forums/topics/679205.

Please note that if I do not reply to your post, I either do not know how to fix your problem or you haven't provided enough information.
Damn, I was just working on an updated wineskin today! Looks like you may have done my work for me. Will give this a going over tonight.

Are you okay with us using this as an official if everything checks out?
Topic Starter
Yes, absolutely!
Thank you
Thanks for the updated wrapper!

I did note some small problems, at least with my install (running macOS 10.13.2 on a MacBook Pro Mid-2012)

- Game may lock when switching through beatmaps at a very specific speed, faster and it works okay, slower and no problems.
- Shaders still don't work, the screen turns black whenever they should activate.
- Framerate lag depends on the amount of objects on the screen at the same time. Maps with high object count play better when the objects appear and disappear fast, as opposed to staying longer on the screen (not very noticeable though)
I upgraded to a dual screen boot and it's showing up as a black screen on both fullscreen (with and without letterboxing) and windowed mode.
I tried changing the regedit file as shown here but it still does not work.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Edit: ing it for the first time resulted in a playable osu! screen. However, when I imported my old files and restarted osu!, the screen goes black.

nvm fixed it by just copying the skins and songs folder (and nothing else)
I'm rather sceptical ing this as an official build. Maybe provide changelog for the changes made to the wrapper?
working good. thanks!

All the changes made to the official wrapper can be found in my Fixing Mac Issues thread: https://osu-ppy-sh.tvgratuite.org/community/forums/topics/679205
This Wineskin wrapper simply collates all the changes for convenience. I don't see the need for a changelog at the moment.
Thank you very very much.
osu! won't start! Help!
I've tried everything according to the guide about the osu! won't start, it still doesn't work, the osu! logo only pops up on the dock but disappears afterwards.

Can you right click osu! and click Open Package Contents and double click on Wineskin. Click Advanced > Test Run. Paste the contents the the test run logs here.

Edit: Make sure the you have moved the osu! application out of the s folder otherwise Filevault will prevent it from working properly.

That's an... extremely strange error to be getting. It looks like Wineskin cannot find the osu!.exe file.

1. Open Wineskin > Advanced
2. Click Browse (on the right of Windows EXE)
3. You'll need to find osu!.exe; The current directory should be drive_c so osu!.exe is in the osu! folder
4. Double click on osu!.exe to select it

If you're still having issues after this try checking Use Start.exe. (Under the Windows EXE textbox). Additionally, please tell me what version of OSX you have because the logs don't show it.
I use 10.9.2 Mavericks
Oh well, it didn't work, I guess I'll just stick with 2015 stable version until the new one will get stable.

For me On Mac Os High sierra 10.13.2 .
- Your Osu is launching Updating and when Osu logo appear it's froze and don't start . Weirdo

Ahh, you're in osu!dev so I'll assume you're more technically versed. Can you paste the contents of the osu! updater logs? (or put it into a gist/pastebin)
Everything works but osu is extremely laggy. Any ideas on how to fix this? :/

I'm not aware of any performance improvements that can be made by Wine directly; Your best bet is to disable as much stuff as possible ingame. Alternatively, if you don't have a dual monitor setup you may consider reenabling CaptureDisplaysForFullscreen. The steps are in my guide: https://osu-ppy-sh.tvgratuite.org/community/forums/topics/679205 under "Help! I'm running a dual monitor setup and osu! blacks out my other screen!". Just be sure to type "Y" instead of "n" in the text box.
I'm going to begin processing this change over at github for official release. I welcome any contributions in reviewing or reducing cruft: https://github.com/ppy/osu-wine/pull/16
It keeps asking me to my even though I have already verified. Won't allow me to play online.
If this works this would be a life saver. Thanks for your work!
holy crap, this is amazing! thank you so much for this

it took a little bit of prodding but it works so amazingly

edit: it broke after first launch with a .net framework initialization error, not sure what's going on. it looks like osu!.exe got updated to a version that wine wasn't expecting, not sure how to fix even the updater is borked. upon further investigation it looks like the release stream in osu.cfg keeps on getting kicked back to the Stable channel (from Stable40)...looks like this happens every time the updater runs past initial startup.

edit: looks like it's happening due to an error: http://ix.io/DNn update log

edit: i got it to work somehow? what i did was repeatedly launch and exit after initial startup to make sure it functioned correctly -- the updater stopped running (which was good.) then i imported my skin and songs after, which also worked. not sure what i did correctly this time lol
I ed the zipfile from the google drive link you provided. I skipped the first step (because this is my first time ing osu! on the mac) and proceeded to move osu! out of the folder, but it doesn't open? Nothing happens when I click it, did I miss something?
You just made a friend very VERY Happy
thank you! runs 100%, except for one problem. i've installed yesterday and every time i play whenever the HP bar starts dropping to around 10-15% the game blacks out, really annoying cause then i just stop being able to see the game and obviously always lose as i can't keep playing to come back. soon as the song is lost i'm able to see the game just fine once again.

Still the same mouse problem. I use to play in Windows with mouse, and on macOS with the raw input and the exact same sensivity, it is unplayable. Mouse seems to be moving so randomly...
Thanks though!

Only thing I can think of is OpenGL issues but your GL Version is only slightly lower than mine so I doubt it's a huge issue. You can try disabling as many graphical effects in the osu! options and if that doesn't work, enable compatibility mode. If even that doesn't work I'll add a section in my guide later that explains how to revert your Wine version to an older one that may work better.

I'm not entirely sure on the internals of mouse movement in OSX but mouse acceleration may be affecting your cursor (since Wine has to translate your OSX cursor to osu!). If you want to disable your mouse acceleration open Terminal and paste this in:
defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.scaling -1
Then press enter.

hey! worked for me - i moved some settings around, something was probably causing conflict and the problem is gone. not sure what it was as i changed a lot of stuff, but fortunately it's properly working again. thanks again for this lovely package now i can say it's fully running :)
omg i spent hours tryng to get osu on mac, tysm!!!!. Works perfectly!
For me osu wont open at all, it says its open but nothing happens, at first it updated and then it was stuck on the osu icon so i closed it. now it won't work and I'm not able to close it or delete it!? I've tried getting osu on my mac for quite some time no and nothing seems to work :(
thank you so much, i got the chance to come back into osu! after 2 years since now i own a macbook, and the game run pretty well, no lag or anything
No matter what I do/try to do, I always get this same message. Any help would be much appreciated.
in my case, the osu! app won't launch. so i went to "show package contents" > wineskin > test run > view logs. and at that point, nothing happens, i just see this: http://prntscr.com/idtb5z
AYYYY FINALLY THANK YOU I FINALLY GOT TO PLAY OSU AGAIN
Hello, it's not really a huge issue, but I used to be able to play with softening filter and shaders but I haven't been able to use them for a long time now.

If I turn on softening filter, the entire screen blacks out. The instant I turn it off, it's fine.

If I turn on shaders, the transition from home screen –> song selection is no longer a fade to black but abruptly turns black. Also when my HP is low, the screen blacks out just like catitaa6.

I've tried doing winetricks –> videomemorysize= ____ because I thought it might work, but it doesn't. And I have already updated to your new Wineskin wrapper (thank you!!). It might be that I use a MBP Retina 2013 (High Sierra)? I feel like the graphics card should be okay, but I am not too sure.
Hi,
I've installed this a couple days ago and it worked fine, until I've enabled compatability mode, and now it says this: http://prntscr.com/ig29h4
Is there a way to disable compatability mode trough editing files, or do I need to do something else?

Thanks
im so excited! i hope you can bring the two updates
fixes game not launching on high sierra and
can run without xquartz!
i hope that i can play again! its ben boring not playing osu for about 28 days but if this works out ill be able to play for good. Im excited
works great thx xd

Extract the skin with a zip extractor and then move the folder into the Skins folder.
So the resulting directory structure should be:
> Skins
--> Minimal 1.2 (or the skin name)
----> approachcircle.png
----> [email protected]
----> ... etc

I hate it when formatting doesn't work
Thank you so so so much!

Yes, I've got it working after rebooting.
But, I need help as I use Wacom's Tablet Settings. Selecting osu!.app, booting the game, my cursor doesn't adjust. I found out the osu! runs on /Volumes/[my drive]/osu!.app/Contents/Frameworks/wswine.bundle/bin/ but on a Unix Executable file, which Wacom Tablet Settings doesn't select.
I finally got it to work for some reason. I don't know why it didn't work last time but now, it's working perfectly! Thank you for this, by the way!
Hi, I just ed it but it lags a lot. Also, then inputs are a bit weird, I keep hitting early. The lag issue is the biggest though. Any help would be great thx
I managed to get to the osu updater window by disabling the "Decorate Windows" in Screen Options and running a test, but now I'm getting the "Unable to find a version of runtime to run this application" error, clicking any of the buttons just closes osu.

EDIT: Adding dotnet40 in winetricks stops the message from appearing, but just ends up crashing anyway. Getting this stuff in the mac system console:

Disabling compatibility mode through the cfg file doesn't work.

EDIT LIKE 6: So ed it again, realised that there was some annoying conflicts with Razer Synapse's Kraken Headset Driver coming up in the wine logs while installing, so gonna remove Razer Synapse and hopefully that'll fix it. I'm pretty sure this happened before on earlier versions of the osu! mac wrapper, I just forgot about it and plugged in my headset without thinking.

EDIT AGAIN: I swear this'll be the last one until I uninstall Synapse, here's the logs
LastRunWine.log

THE VERY LAST EDIT (two months later): Yeah so uninstalling Razer Synapse worked out for me I have no idea why this is a problem.

Here's an unofficial update to the osu! OSX package. This is a direct replacement for the official osu! Wineskin package that can be found here: http://osuosx.tumblr.com

It has several improvements and fixes several issues (in comparison to the official Wineskin package) including (but not exhaustive):
  1. Fixes game not launching on High Sierra
  2. Reduces input lag
  3. Reduces frame drops
  4. Increases FPS
  5. Removes the need for XQuartz
  6. Prevents f.lux temporarily disabling when switching windows
  7. Smoother opening of beatmaps
  8. Fixes erratic unfocusing of cursor when using keyboard to tap due to Location Services
  9. Allows swiping to switch between windows
  10. Fixes black screen issue with dual or more monitor setups
  11. Fixes minimising of osu! when focus changes

Results may vary

If you're uncomfortable with using a file ed from a complete stranger (and you should be) you can follow my guide here to obtain (mostly) the same Wineskin package.
[Guide] Fixing Mac Issues: https://osu-ppy-sh.tvgratuite.org/community/forums/topics/679205

How to install 3t6x1u

Steps

  1. First you'll need to save your osu! data so you can transfer it over later. See my guide here on How to do a data backup (apply it on the old osu! app): https://osu-ppy-sh.tvgratuite.org/community/forums/topics/679205
  2. the package from the previously shown link
  3. Extract the .zip file
  4. Move the osu! application out of the s folder otherwise it will not start properly
  5. Run (double click) on the osu! app. The osu! updater should run and start osu! after a while
  6. Close osu!
  7. See my guide here on How to restore a data backup (apply it on the ed osu! app): https://osu-ppy-sh.tvgratuite.org/community/forums/topics/679205

Now you can move the ed osu! application anywhere you want and it should work fine.

Hey i'm having a problem, i ed a skin and when i put it in the skin folder it wont import it into the game. what can i do to fix this?

The simplest way is to drag the osk file onto the running osu! game (make sure it is in windowed) then it'll automatically add the skin
It worked fine until one day it said "unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application". I re-installed but it said the same thing. wut do
Thank You! i haven't had a problem using this, except having to weirdly closing it without quitting just to import beatmaps.
I've looked through here and can't seem to find a solution for my issue. I'm using a Wacom Intuos P S (newest intuos tablet, also known as intuos draw) when I play osu! and when I'm playing, the cursor will freeze for a few seconds - every 10-20 seconds and make me fail. I have Wacom drivers installed, so I checked to see if it was my tablet by playing with my mouse and I get the same problem. The mouse & tablet works perfectly fine outside of osu! so I'm not sure what the problem is.
tks
I cant with my osu ...
It says "connecting to bancho" forever.
Stuck.
Is great! When it works. Most of the time, when I select a song to play, it will load for a bit, but then freeze.

Edit:Okay I have noticed I can get it to work if I am in Windowed mode. But I need to have my cursor outside of the window for it to load
Hi I just tried in on my mac. It ran very smoothly and i haven't notice any lagging problem like before. Here is my mac spec https://imgur.com/a/6ch2I

When i use the osu tablet, I did notice that the sensitivity have to be at 1.0, or it will jump around like crazy and lose control. So I simply shrink the active area of the tablet with the huion 420 driver. So all in all pretty good so far! Thanks for the release!
Please fix this problem. It happens to me frequently now
I'm able to run osu, but I'm unable to connect to Bancho. When I do, it tells me I need to , and I've already done that. Wat do? :(
Hi, so I accidentally clicked the compatibility mode in the Osu! game and after updating it said I'm missing a file. What can I do to get it working again? The title says "osu!.exe-.NET Framework Initialization..." and its description "Unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application"

It keeps asking me to my even though I have already verified. Won't allow me to play online.

I am getting the same problem please help!

Yes, but randomly at some point. (like selecting beatmap or loading a beatmap, menu screen, etc.)
WOWZA thank you so much, this worked so well for me! I was afraid I wasn't going to be playing osu anymore after the new update. Thank you so much for spending the time to do this! You aren't the hero we deserved, but the hero we needed. <3
Technocoder, you should be responding with all the comments. :/

School has been making it difficult for me to find time and motivation to try and fix these issues. Unfortunately, most of these issues don't appear for me at all so it is incredibly hard to fix them myself. From what I have gathered so far, most of these issues crop up in older Macs and versions of OSX.

For those with the message "Unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application", the only guaranteed fix I know is to simply reinstall the wrapper. Literally, just re it and drag all your songs into the new wrapper. Just make sure **not** to drag in your config file as it probably contains a switch to install a different version of osu! which causes that error.

As for your crash, you'll want to at the very least post the content that's produced by the "show details" button as literally nothing else gives details on what could be causing the crash... :P
Understandable, thanks. So we shouldn't update our osu? Few minutes ago, there has been a new update then it closes the game, when it opens back up it only display the "Unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application". So I guess I shouldn't.

I'll be honest, I'm not sure whether you should update or not, but I would guess that if osu! works for you without updating then I would leave it alone, since it looks like osu! in OSX is a little bit fragile.
Hey,

I ed the osu on my new computer ( mac ) and It raised no errors, but when I open it and it it just does not open, I then try to open it again ( 5 minutes later ) and it says it can't be opened

Any help?
Many thanks my dude
Finally, Thanks !
so just to be sure I did something wrong or there is already something wrong with the wineskin launcher. something in the terminal always tells me that a useless file wont let me luanch cuz of this "WineskinLauncher[18330:70083] ERROR, wrapper was re-run with no recognized command line options while already running."
