Obviously we can't quantify "safe map" and don't want to either (since BNs perennially nominating safe maps is fine). We want to see the applicant judge it to be safe by themselves and not solely by virtue of being by an experienced mapper or by being bubbled, indicating widespread approval by other BNs. For what it's worth the vast majority of apps I've seen have been exclusively mods on 0-ranked map mappers so if anything this is explicitly expanding it from the de facto "meta" restrictions.

ikin5050

587 posts

ed February 2014

ikin5050

2024-03-26T14:28:09+00:00

Nao Tomori wrote:
Map 1: Submit a "BN check" mod on a map that you believe is close to a rankable / nominatable state. Both map 1 and map 2 should be immediately ready to press the nominate button on if your mods are addressed and applied properly? The only real difference between these is that the first map has a silly <5 ranked maps requirement on it. I also don't really see how it helps especially for taiko specifically where everyone and their dog can get 5 ranked maps without making anything that would be considered a 'safe map'.

Eithne

253 posts

ed August 2013

Eithne

2024-03-26T15:16:52+00:00

not a fan of the 5 ranked map limit being on the 'accept' map, as by your own ission, BNs perennially nominating safe maps is fineto be fully transparent, i'm one of these BNs; there just aren't many new mappers who make things i like enough to nominate and i wouldn't want to see people trying to lower their own standards to just get into bn

Last edited by Eithne 2024-03-26T15:18:59+00:00, edited 1 time in total.

achyoo

osu! If applicants are being evaluated on their ability to evaluate, and they pick the "safe map" like you alluded to, the "why" question forces them to showcase their understanding and evaluation of the map's quality, and gives you a glimpse into their thought process as well as quality standards. Truly capable applicants would have no issue with this part, and those who rely on others' widespread approval would struggle and thus be filtered out during the evaluation process. It also reduces the likelihood that the applicant picks a mapper who can easily rank maps; if they are unable to satisfactory justify themselves beyond "This map is clean and has no issues, while representing the song well." then they can be rejected for "lack of content in application, cannot accurately judge applicant". This has happened many times under the old system where applicants apply with mods that don't fully cover the grounds expected of them, so I don't see why it cannot be carried over to the new system. With rejection for "lack of content" being a possibility, applicants will be less likely to self-sabotage by picking "safe, easily rankable" maps to use in their application.Would like to hear what you think about this.

Last edited by achyoo 3s1b1o
